TacticalNavigation - Future Overview (Comming Soon)
TacticalNavigation is designed as a high-performance navigation framework for tactical and strategy gameplay built on top of Unreal Engine. The system focuses on deterministic movement, influence-driven decision making, and scalable pathfinding suitable for large numbers of AI agents.
The plugin builds a hex-based navigation layer on top of the NavMesh, combining the reliability of Unreal’s navigation system with a deterministic grid structure optimized for tactical gameplay. Thats something that can really brutally change development workflow.
Hex-Based Navigation Layer
During initialization, TacticalNavigation generates a hexagonal navigation graph from the existing NavMesh. Only valid walkable positions are converted into hex nodes, and all valid transitions between neighboring hexes are precomputed.
This preprocessing stage allows the system to:
- Cache walkable hexes
- Validate hex-to-hex transitions
- Precompute navigation adjacency
Once built, the hex graph becomes the primary runtime navigation structure, eliminating the need for repeated NavMesh queries during gameplay.
Fast Runtime Pathfinding
Runtime pathfinding operates directly on the hex graph, enabling very fast searches using algorithms such as A* or Dijkstra.
Because the graph is prevalidated and compact, pathfinding becomes:
- Deterministic
- Cache-friendly
- Suitable for large-scale AI simulations
NavMesh is only used for:
- Initial graph construction
- Optional final movement smoothing.
Tactical Influence System
TacticalNavigation integrates an influence grid layered on top of the hex graph. Each hex cell can store dynamic costs representing tactical factors such as:
- Threat zones
- Visibility and cover
- Enemy presence
- Terrain penalties
- Objective priorities
These influence values modify pathfinding cost dynamically, allowing AI to make tactical movement decisions instead of purely geometric ones.
Dynamic Actor Support
The system supports variable agent sizes by evaluating clearance on graph edges, ensuring that agents of different radii can safely traverse the navigation network. This approach allows the same navigation graph to serve multiple unit types with different movement constraints.
Large-Scale AI Support
Because navigation queries operate on a lightweight hex graph rather than the NavMesh, TacticalNavigation is designed to support:
- Large numbers of AI units
- Frequent path recalculations
- Tactical simulations and turn-based systems
- Real-time influence updates
Intended Use Cases
TacticalNavigation is particularly suited for:
- Tactical shooters
- Strategy and RTS games
- Turn-based combat systems
- Squad-based AI movement
- Simulation-heavy AI environments
Long-Term Vision
Future development aims to expand TacticalNavigation into a complete tactical movement framework, including:
- advanced influence propagation systems
- group and formation movement
- hierarchical navigation for very large maps
- tactical evaluation layers for AI decision making
- editor tooling for visualization and debugging
The long-term goal is to provide a robust tactical navigation foundation for Unreal Engine projects that require deterministic, scalable, and tactically aware movement systems.
